Higher Eductation
1998 to April 2000 University Of Brighton Moulsecoomb Site

HND Course in Computing

HND in Computing – Year 2 Client Server

Java, Java scripting, ODBC & JDBC, Perl, CGI, Oriented Object Modeling, Apache, SQL Server, Advanced Web Page Design, Visual Basic, Planning for Client Server.

Within this course, I have discovered many new aspects of computing. Taking the databasing aspect one step further by utilising the SQL Server solution. This involved fully integrating the system using front-ends such as Access, and simply through a browser using Perl and Java via an ODBC or JDBC link. During this semester, the course criteria involved fully setting up a web server using Apache, and other similar applications. There was a more ‘business’ oriented module, which involved outlining a planning for 1) setting up a client server system – 2) Security issues and 3) General maintenance

HND in Computing – Year 1- Computing

Modules Covered In The First Semester: Databasing, Connecting Computers, GUI Design, Ada 95 Programming, Visual Basic, Electronics Workbench & Logic Gates, Excel, & General Skills. In the second semester, I carried out SSADM, Web Page design, PowerPoint presentations, Reasoned Programming, Networking, and Working in IT.

September 99 to April 2000 St. Dunstans Charity Ovingdean, Brighton

General Assistant
St. Dunstans is a registered charity for the blind injured in the services. I was employed within this company to help them catch up on some work, which had become overdue. Firstly this meant helping out within the central stores of the building which handles all the stocks and deliveries. This also included the construction of an entire new database system created in Microsoft’s Access. I then went on to further my work in the transport department, which needed a complete office restructure and system redesign. I had to produce several graphical documents during the employment within this company.

1995 to September 1999 Marks & Spencer Holmbush Centre, Shoreham-by-Sea

General Operations Assistant
For 4 years, I had part time employment with Marks and Spencer’s as a General Operations Assistant. This involves carrying out regular activities such as handling deliveries and sorting out the warehouse behind the scenes of the Shop floor. I am in charge of the correct temperature control with in the fridges, via an online monitor system. Also, tasks involve daily opening or closing of the store, training new members of staff, as well as present employees for the fire party. Being a key holder for the store, I am also responsible for locking and unlocking the store, and being called out for various reasons. Occasionally I help with the new till system, which is basically an enormous NT network.

1992 to 1994 Wilson’s Office Moves Shoreham-By-Sea

Office Moves
For this part time work, I helped in the area of office moving, which involved re-organising plans and arrangements for a variety of offices and rooms. This meant also the regular occurrence of setting up P.C’s and other peripherals, as well as general office furniture.
A lot of the jobs we carried out were for Cable and Wireless Telecommunications LTD.

1992 to 1994 Apparel Master UK LTD Mill Road, Fishersgate

General Assistant
This was a textile rental company, which involves the collection, cleaning, and distribution garments throughout the UK. I participated during holidays and breaks from school, mostly contributing help with the computerisation of their bar-coding system. Occasionally I had to participate on the actually delivery of garments

Software Experience

I have been using computer ever since an early age, mostly self-taught. I especially enjoy creating web pages, I have several of my own which I enjoy updating and maintaining, also producing any graphical presentations.

During my course, and working environment, I have also done several small commercial projects, such as flyers, company web pages, and general leaflets. Some clients include Vauxhall, International Contacts, Broadband Technology etc.,

I have several examples of work I have produced for both my course and for personal use, which can be produced on request.

Overall I have a very good understanding of the following software packages:

Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft FrontPage, SQL Server

Macromedia Dream Weaver, Flash, Fireworks, Freehand, Director

Apache Web Server, IIS, LiveMotion

Adobe Photoshop, Aftereffects, Illustration

I expect by the time you read this, I will have learnt more applications, as new software is being released regularly.

Objectives

I have now finished my HND in computing, after realising that Accountancy was not for me last year. Due to the success of this course to date, I have realised that this is the area I would like to progress into, especially as the participation of computers in our everyday lives is increasing daily. I am able to progress to the degree level after I have finished my HND, but I am uncertain which route to take as I would prefer a more ‘hands-on’ approach of training with an actual company.

For the second semester of this course, a group project has been decided to setup a server with two client machines, one ‘based’ on an intranet with the other being an external client on the WWW. For this project, we aim to create the server with two network cards, one supplying the intranet, one supplying the Internet as a web server. However, security will need to be high, therefore we need to allow the internal client access to the Internet, without the external client being able to see in.

I enjoy web design, (having several of my own), anything graphically related for example creating presentations, and also technical support and networking. Perl, however is a strong language that I enjoy, especially when used in conjunction with CGI and the Internet.

I have a large and substantial portfolio of work, which I have undergone, which can be provided on request.
